If you’ve never heard of Balmain, get ready to see a lot more of it. While the label has existed since 1945, it got a face lift in 2005 when a new creative director was appointed, Christophe Decarnin.
Creative Director, Christophe Decarnin
Originally from Touquet, France, Decarnin was first attracted to the fashion world after flipping through a book by photographer Richard Avenon. After studying at Esmod in Paris, Decarnin worked as creative director of the women’s collection at Paco Rabanne before working as a consultant for a number of French labels.

Spring-Summer 2010
This Spring, the label is launching a sexy and glamorous collection with a strong influence from the military. The collection includes a number of military jackets, torn tees, bullet belts, and worn jeans. The other influence – disco – shows a cross between the army and Studio 57, with sequined dresses in camouflaged colours. Overall, the collection is fantastic! So much so that it has been named one of the top 10 collections of the season on Style.com. And why not? The collection has influenced so many retailers. We are seeing similar pieces at more affordable stores including Zara, Mango, BCBG Max Azria and even Forever 21.

Judging from what I’ve seen so far on the runway, there are definitely a few pieces I will be adopting! What about you? Do you feel the influence of Balmain in your closet?
