Is there anything better than Nutella? That chocolatey hazelnutty spread that tastes amazing with just about anything (I especially love it with a spoon). But when I decided to clean up my diet, it was inevitable – Nutella and I just had to break up. It was difficult at first, I would think about it all the time. How could I want something that was so bad for me? It’s not until I did a little research and came across healthy alternatives that I felt alive again! Ok, I might be exaggerating a little, but if you’re looking to indulge without throwing your clean, healthy diet out the window, this is just the fix you need.
Now, I’m going to be honest, it doesn’t taste exactly like Nutella, but rather a more refined version of it. It’s packed with delicious sweet dates, which contain the essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are required for normal growth, development and overall well-being. Raw hazelnuts, rich in unsaturated fats (great for the heart), vitamin E (proven to protect skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation, such as skin cancer and premature aging) and high in B vitamins to provide you with the energy you need to get through your day. Plus, it’s delicious with fruits, graham crackers, toast… what’s not to love!
Make 1 medium jar
1 cup of hazelnuts
1 cup of dates
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp pure maple syrup
2 tbsp raw unsweetened cocoa powder
1- Place hazelnuts in a bowl and cover with water Let them soak at least 8 hours or overnight.
2- After a good night sleep, drain the hazelnuts and place in a blender. Add the dates, water, pure maple syrup and cocoa powder and blend away! Let the mixture blend for a few minutes depending on the consistency you want. I chose to keep it slightly chunky.
3- Transfer to a jar with a spoon and lick the spoon clean. Dip spoon in the jar, lick clean and repeat (you get the idea).
