With the fall slowly settling in, I’m beginning to crave comfort foods and sweets more and more. Very dangerous, especially when I worked so hard at exercising regularly and eating clean. Too many “comforting” meals and sugary treats are not what I need a few months before my trip to Hawaii. Plus, sugar is so bad for you that I’ve been experimenting with recipes that cut out the white stuff and use natural sugars instead. Case in point, dark chocolate avocado mousse. It feeds my sweet tooth and my constant desire for dark chocolate without the nasty sugar. It’s also loaded with health benefits. The avocado provide the healthy fats that keep your skin glowing and omega 3 fatty acids essential for shiny hair. Coconut oil is wonderful for improving blood sugar and also increase your metabolism, energy and endurance. And maple syrup, well… it’s just delicious!
Dark Chocolate Avocado Mousse
8 dates, pitted (soak for 10 minutes if they are on the drier side)
1 cup raw cocoa powder
1/3 cup real maple syrup
1 tbsp coconut oil, melted
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of Maldon sea salt, for serving
Pinch of red pepper flakes, for serving
1. Combine all the ingredients, except the Maldon sea salt and red pepper flakes in a food processor and give it a whirl until the texture is smooth, scrapping down the sides as needed.
2. Top with Maldon sea salt or red pepper flakes.
