Life is a constant rollercoaster. If you are familiar with the changes that have occurred in my life over the past few months, you know that there have been a lot of ups and downs. Throughout these changes, I’ve learned to evaluate what’s truly important to me and try to live life as simply as possible (and me being me, that hasn’t always been easy). On most days, my focus is about what makes me happy, learning to not take things personally and not sweating the small stuff. But there are still times when I just feel down. In those times, I have a few tricks that help lift me from my funk and make me see the brighter side of things. Here are 5 things that help me feel instantly happier.
Close your eyes and take a deep breath. I take a moment to try to understand why I am feeling the way I am. I say “try” because it’s not always obvious where our feelings come from. Taking the time to take a few breaths also prevents me from reacting before I have time to understand my emotions. The moments that I give myself in these situations often make me realize that I’m making a big deal out of something small, and make me see that what I am feeling will soon pass.
Be grateful. Social media is a wonderful thing, but it can also be a source of sadness and frustration. Scrolling through your feed, looking at the perfect lives everyone seems to have is the perfect way to feel like you don’t measure up. Instead of comparing yourself and seeing everything you don’t have, take a moment to see everything you do have. From your wonderful boyfriend who surprises you with your favourite cupcakes, to your awesome family that makes you laugh, to your pets that are always there to cuddle with you when you need it most, you’ll realize that you are richer than you think!
Do what makes you feel good. Sure you can wait for someone else to do something nice for you, but what about doing something for yourself. Treat yourself to a manicure, or better yet set the scene for an afternoon of complete pampering. There’s nothing wrong with scheduling a little “me time” for yourself. You can also treat yourself to beautiful flowers, splurge on that yummy treat or give yourself a gift of those new shoes. You deserve it because you are awesome!
Get up and get moving. Elle Woods said it best when she said that exercise releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy! There are mornings that I wake up feeling a little off without knowing why. The best way to get rid of that icky feeling is to lace up my shoes and head out for a run. The feeling is being free and running in the woods is like no other. I mean, how can you possibly feel funky after that! I’ve also started interval training in the morning which leaves me feeling strong and alive, and squashes any bad feelings that may have been lingering. Whether you like to walk, run, do pilates or yoga, find an activity that makes you feel good.
Just say yes! I’m an introvert. And like most introverts, I love to spend time at home quietly. Although this ensures I get my share of me time, it also means that I can sometimes miss out of life. So I made it a point to say yes as much as I can. What to go on a late night bike ride? Yes! What to go check out that new brunch spot? Yes! What to take a yoga class? Yes! I say yes whenever I can and let me just say that I am always happy that I did. Taking opportunities as they come is a great way to feel alive and getting the most out of life. Try it, you might be surprised!
