I LOVE apple season! I would say that it’s the thing I look forward to most in the fall. Each year, my mom and I set off to an orchard with the goal of picking the biggest apples we can find. Needless to say that this year was a very big success! We each came home with a 20-lb bag of Red Cort apples. And so, the baking begins!
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know that I try to make each recipe healthier, whether it’s cutting down on sugar (or replacing it completely), avoiding butter or adding more fruits and veggies. But let’s face it, some recipes just need the sweet taste of brown sugar. So I was excited to hear that Truvia had come out with their new Brown Sugar Blend that has 75% fewer calories than regular brown sugar. Sweetness and fewer calories? Count me in!
So what is Truvia Brown Sugar Blend? It’s actually made with real brown sugar combined with with Truvia Natural Sweetener, giving it the texture and moistness of brown sugar perfect for baking. Also it’s much sweeter than regular brown sugar so you only need to use half as much. For example, if your recipe calls for 1 cup of brown sugar, Truvia recommends you use 1/2 cup of Truvia Brown Sugar Blend. This may not seem like a big difference, but it means cutting the calories from 830 (regular brown sugar) to 210 (Truvia Brown Sugar Blend).
With a big bag of freshly picked apples sitting in my kitchen, I decided to experiment with this new brown sugar blend. I tried a recipe for crispy apple crumble that my mom made the other week, making a few changes to the recipe to see if Truvia Brown Sugar Blend was really it was all cracked up to be. It was! Apples baked with brown sugar and pecans are the perfect flavours to welcome a cold fall day. I used Truvia Brown Sugar Blend in the apple mixture and the crunchy topping and the results were absolutely delicious.
