Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE coconut. Anything coconut flavoured or scented… ANYTHING! Turns out that I’m also equally obsessed with coconut oil. Why? Because it’s awesome in so many ways!
First, coconut oil helps our bodies gain resistance to viruses and bacterias that cause illness. It also helps to manage blood sugar, boost thyroid function (which increases metabolism and gives us energy), and helps with digestion. Plus, it’s a healthy fat that helps us reduce belly fat (score!).
Beyond cooking with it, there are so many ways to use it as a beauty product. I recently discovered a brand that uses it as an ingredient to nourish your hair. Niucoco is a Montreal-based hair care company that uses the benefits of cold-pressed coconut oil (along with plenty of other natural ingredients) in their collection of professional quality shampoos, conditioners and serums. I had the chance to try the Renewing Hair Serum at the launch of the collection and it left my hair soft, shiny and smelling like a beach vacation. Coconut oil in a hair care product? Why didn’t anyone think of that before?! They probably have, but not with the quality ingredients and purity of Niucoco (did I mention their products are sulfate, paraben and phthalate free, with no artificial fragrances, gluten-free and 100% vegan?). Beyond the beauty of coconut oil for your hair, if you have a regular jar of the white stuff lying around, here are a few other ways that you can use it in your beauty routine.
DIY Body Scrub: Mix an equal amount of coconut oil and sugar to make an exfoliating scrub for your face and body. Bask in the softness of your skin.
Lip Balm: Stash a small amount in your handbag to reap the ultra-hydrating benefits of coconut oil on the go. I especially love this for the dry winter months.
Makeup Remover: Take a small amount of coconut oil and massage it on your face using circular motions and watch your makeup melt away. Wipe the excess off using a warm damp washcloth.
Inexpensive Highlighter: Everyone love dewy skin. Dab a small amount of coconut oil on the high points of your cheekbones to add a radiant glow.
Hydrating Bath: Drop a few tablespoons of coconut oil to a warm bath and let it do all the skin-softening work while you relax.
Moisturizer: Coconut oil has the perfect creamy texture to use as a light moisturizer. Apply immediately after stepping out of the shower to hydrate skin and get yourself smelling like a Hawaiian goddess. It’s also amazing at hydrating dry cuticles, heels and elbows.
