“Nothing tastes as good as being healthy feels.”
I’m a huge fan of green drinks – green juices, green smoothies, green tea… there’s just something about the colour that screams health. These drinks are packed with nutrients that your body craves and thrives on. My latest obsession (ok, maybe I’ve been obsessed for a few years now), is matcha tea. Not the sugary kind you’ll find at the coffee shop, I’m talking about real, unsweetened matcha powder, which is loaded with health benefits. If you’re unfamiliar with matcha, keep reading to get to know this powerful antioxidant…
What is matcha?
Matcha is tea leaves that have been picked, steamed dried and ground into a fine powder. This is what makes one cup of matcha so much more powerful and beneficial than a regular cup of tea. In fact, one cup of match packs the same amount of antioxidants as 10 cups of regular tea. If you didn’t already know, antioxidants are great for keeping your skin gorgeous by fighting signs of aging and fighting free radical that can cause wrinkles. It also contains vitamin C, which can boost collagen in your skin, and L-theanine, known to lower stress and help you stay chill. Seriously, what’s not to love?
Health benefits of matcha
Besides keeping your skin beautiful and glowing and keeping you calm, matcha has been known to have positive effect on metabolism. It’s also been know to help alleviate joint pain and mental clarity and focus.
The upgraded matcha
There are tons of matcha powders to choose from, but like any food you choose to add to your diet, you have to know what you’re consuming. Matcha powder can often have traces of lead and other contaminants, so when purchasing matcha go for the organic and higher quality. One that I love is the Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen. The matcha used is of the highest quality so you know you’re getting the good stuff. There’s also 10 g of bovine hide collagen peptides for an extra dose of good-for-your-skin-hair-nails-and-everything-else benefits. Plus, with 2/3 the amount caffeine as a cup of coffee, it’s quickly becoming the new morning drink to get me going for the day.
How to drink matcha
Matcha can easily be blended into cold milk or added to a smoothy. Personally I love to froth up some unsweetened vanilla almond milk and add a scoop of the Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen. I use a whisk to blend it really well, add a touch of honey and voilà! The perfect super drink! Like any other matcha, you can also add it to whatever you’re baking, like white chocolate chip matcha muffins, for an extra antioxidant/collagen kick. Plus, it’s dairy-free, gluten-free and has no added sugar.
