“One small positive thought in the morning can change your entire day.”
It’s been a crazy busy week. Last week I left for California for a few days to escape life in Montreal and it was amazing! I got to visit this beautiful place for the first time and fell in love. The sun, the weather, the vibe… it was all perfect.
What is it about getting out of your regular routine and just going with the flow that feels so damn good. It had been a solid three years since my last official vacation and needless to say that it was more than necessary. The stress and anxiety that was looming over me for the past few months dissipated and I started feeling like myself again and refocusing my attention on what’s truly important in my life – mainly my relationship and happiness.
In any case, back to what I was here to tell you in the first place. When I travel, I like to go with the flow (it’s the best way to discover), but the one thing that I try to maintain as much as possible is my morning routine – light, move, hydrate.
I’ve been doing this routine for years, but recently heard it being called LIGHT, MOVEMENT, HYDRATION by Lauryn Evarts, the badass chick from The Skinny Confidential when she had Aubrey Marcus on her podcast (sidetone: if you don’t listen to The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast, you’re missing out on life). Whatever you want to call it, it’s all the same so let’s get into the details:
Let me preface this by saying that I’m not a morning person per se, however I do think that if you’re trying to become a morning person, light is an essential part of the equation. It literally pushes your body’s on button and tells it to wake up. It’s most definitely easier in the summer when you can actually wake up with the light. It’s so much less jolting than with a shrill alarm. But in the winter you do what you can, which in my case is using the Bedtime alarm on my iPhone and switching on a nightlight to ease myself into the day.
Once I’ve crawled out of bed, I get dressed and drag my ass to the gym. Yes, I’m a morning gym person and I actually really love it. I have an odd amount of energy when I first wake up so for me it’s the best time to get an awesome workout in. I usually work out fasted with only BCAAs in my cup to help me power through my workouts (except on weekends when I have more time). I’m not saying that you have to switch your gym time to mornings, but just get moving. I promise after a few days, it will get easier.
The step in between the LIGHT and MOVE is HYRDRATION (don’t ask me why I didn’t put these in order). The first thing I have in the morning is always a half litre of warm water with half a lemon squeezed into it and a splash of ACV. The recommended dose of H2O daily is 2 to 3 L, but I feel that it should be more. I typically drink closer to 3L a day in the form of water, coffee or tea and make sure that I’m drinking water consistently throughout the day. It helps keep my body feeling replenished, prevents me for snacking mindlessly and keeps my skin looking beautiful and hydrated.
